Bauchi State local government elections

In preparation for the local government council elections in Bauchi State, the state government declared a public holiday for August 17, 2026, to facilitate voting. The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) confirmed that 15 political parties were prepared to participate and noted that sensitive electoral materials had been distributed under tight security.

However, a coalition of five political parties—the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), African Action Congress (AAC), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)—announced a boycott of the elections. The coalition cited grievances regarding the use of the state’s 2008 electoral law, which they argued created a “weak and legally vulnerable foundation” compared to the national Electoral Act 2026.

Other complaints from the opposition included excessive nomination and administrative fees, a compressed election timetable, and logistical requirements that imposed extra financial burdens. While the coalition demanded a postponement, BASIEC chairperson Hajiya Jummai Sadiq denied any wrongdoing and insisted the polls proceed.
