By mid-August 2026, toxic cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) blooms intensified across Europe, driven by high temperatures and nutrient-rich waters. In Germany, the situation escalated in the Baltic Sea, where satellite imagery revealed extensive clusters of cyanobacteria along the coast between Rostock and Hiddensee, extending toward Denmark. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, authorities warned of allergic reactions, skin irritation, nausea, and vomiting. The Rostock Health Office advised avoiding beach segments near Warnemünde. In Schleswig-Holstein, several lakes faced swimming bans, while in Bavaria, officials monitored Tychonema algae in lakes such as Kissinger Weitmannsee and Afrasee 2. Precautionary bans and warnings were also issued for Rußweiher, Heimstettener See, Deininger Weiher, and parts of Brombachsee. In Frankfurt, algae in the Main River prompted warnings for kayakers and paddleboarders. In Poland, strict swimming bans were implemented at several beaches on the Hel Peninsula and in Danzig Bay. By early September, the situation in Germany continued to evolve. In the Saale-Orla-Kreis, the health department expanded swimming warnings for the Bleiloch Reservoir to include the Saalburg-Beach and Kloster sections due to strong greenish turbidity. Although laboratory tests for microcystin had not yet exceeded limits, diagnostic sampling remained underway. Additionally, in the Weilheim-Schongau district, health officials advised against swimming in the Dorfweiher in Eglfing, the Koppenbergweiher in Habach, and the Eckenbühler Weiher in Obersöchering, noting that children and dogs are particularly at risk from toxins that cause skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. By September 5, reports from southern Germany indicated shifting conditions. In the Augsburg district, water temperatures have cooled since early July, and while many lakes like Ellgauer Badesee remain safe, blue algae were detected again at the Zusmarshauser Rothsee, where authorities advised visitors to strictly follow warning signs.
