Public transport in Bavaria continues to evolve through infrastructure modernization and service expansion. In East Bavaria, Deutsche Bahn is renovating the rail corridor between Obertraubling and Passau, involving the renewal of 120 kilometers of track, 140 switches, and 90 kilometers of overhead lines, with replacement bus services active on the RE 50 and RB 51 lines. Data from 2025 shows total scheduled distances for buses and trains reached 682 million kilometers, a 3.0 percent increase from 2024. This growth was most significant in rural areas, where scheduled kilometers rose by 4.8 percent to 358 million. In peri-urban areas, the offering increased by 1.9 percent to 164 million kilometers, while metropolitan areas remained stable at approximately 133 million kilometers. Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter noted that 38.4 percent of rural public transport is now demand-driven via flexible services. However, critics have pointed out that scheduled kilometers do not reflect actual passenger volume or occupancy rates. At the municipal level, local authorities are pursuing diverse modernization strategies. In the Bayreuth district, a committee is investigating ways to close service gaps during evenings and weekends by exploring demand-responsive transport and the expansion of on-call taxis. Meanwhile, in In Wolfratshausen, the city council is proceeding with plans to transition its municipal bus service to electric power and increase service frequency, seeking state-level funding after being denied federal subsidies for the conversion from diesel to battery-operated vehicles. Recent infrastructure work near Markt Schwaben has necessitated a rail replacement bus service for commuters traveling between Markt Schwaben and Erding, which has resulted in significantly longer travel times. Additionally, KVB has scheduled overnight maintenance on overhead lines in the Höhenhaus area between October 21 and 22, affecting Stadtbahn Line 4.
