Bay of Bengal cyclone impact in Sri Lanka
Overview
A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is projected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 26 and potentially a severe cyclonic storm by October 27. While a direct landfall in Sri Lanka is not currently expected, the system is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm to several provinces, including Sabaragamuwa, Central, North, North-Western, and Southern regions.
As the storm develops, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings, including Level 2 (Amber) alerts for parts of the Kalutara, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts. Authorities are also monitoring rising water levels in the Kelani River, Kalu Ganga, and Attanagalu Oya. Adverse weather recorded between September 18 and October 26 has already resulted in 12 deaths, 25 injuries, and affected over 10,000 people.
