Bayesian superyacht sinking and aftermath

Following the sinking of the superyacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily in August 2024, which resulted in seven deaths including British billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter, investigations and legal consequences have emerged.

A ZDF documentary, “Terra X: Das Drama um die Superyacht Bayesian”, highlights findings from the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch. The report suggests that incomplete stability documentation, an excessively tall mast, and extreme weather contributed to the vessel capsizing. Experts suggest the vessel was struck by a powerful downburst with wind speeds reaching 130 kilometers per hour, causing it to sink in approximately 15 seconds.

Concurrently, the Italian Sea Group (TISG), a major superyacht manufacturer and parent company of the shipyard Perini Navi, has filed for insolvency. The company submitted its bankruptcy petition to a court in Florence on July 1, following significant financial losses and a lack of new orders since the accident. TISG is currently being put up for sale.

The company faces severe reputational damage and intense legal battles. Angela Bacares, the yacht’s owner and widow of Lynch, has filed claims against the shipyard, alleging that former TISG chief Giovanni Costantino had publicly described the vessel as ‘unsinkable’. TISG has denied liability and instead filed a €456 million lawsuit against the yacht’s owner, the captain, and crew members, alleging that hatches and doors were left open during the storm. TISG leadership has undergone changes, including the resignation of founder Giovanni Costantino, who alleged that certain managers bypassed control systems and falsified documents regarding construction costs.
