Bayreuth 150th anniversary: anti‑right stance & AI Ring

Entities: Rienzi · Michel Friedman · Verstummte Stimmen · Bayreuth Festival · Marcus Lobbes

Overview

In June 2026 the Bayreuth Festival cancelled the planned memorial concert “Verstummte Stimmen,” citing security concerns. The decision was criticised by Jewish publicist Michel Friedman, prompting director Katharina Wagner to apologise and pledge that the event would go ahead.

The festival reinstated the ceremony for 26 July, featuring Friedman’s speech, Mahler excerpts and a performance of Wagner’s “Siegfried‑Idyll” under Semyon Bychkov. Proceeds were earmarked for scholarships for young Israeli musicians. An outdoor exhibition titled “Verstummte Stimmen” opened on 20 July, honoring Jewish musicians persecuted by the Nazis.

The 150th‑anniversary celebrations began on 25 July with the first staging of Wagner’s early opera Rienzi, presented as a warning against forgetting history and as a memorial against fascism. The programme also included Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and the permanent “Verstummte Stimmen” exhibition.

On the same day the festival unveiled a one‑off AI‑generated version of the four‑part Ring of the Nibelungen, created by a custom system trained by Marcus Lobbes and projected on six screens, conducted by Christian Thielemann with Michael Volle as Wotan. The German government announced up to €4.2 million in additional funding for the anniversary year and signalled possible long‑term support of up to €1 million per year.

Friedman addressed the audience, urging active defence of democracy and warning of a far‑right surge, while Wagner reiterated a “No” stance to racism, antisemitism and right‑wing drift. An international singers’ competition and a joint Bayreuth‑Shanghai project were also announced, extending the festival’s cultural outreach beyond Germany.
