Overview

BC Ferries experienced service cancellations on routes between Vancouver Island and the Central Coast due to a mechanical issue involving a vessel’s stern tube shaft seal. Since then, a coalition of more than 15 unions representing over 7,000 marine industry workers has launched the ‘Build Them Here’ campaign. The group is demanding that BC Ferries construct its next fleet, specifically the Summit Class vessels, within British Columbia to provide economic support for local families and reduce reliance on global supply chains for repairs and parts. BC Ferries maintains it adjusted qualification criteria specifically to encourage domestic participation during the procurement process.
