The BC SPCA has expanded its specialized care capabilities on Vancouver Island through wildlife rehabilitation and new behavioral facilities. Initial efforts focused on the Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Metchosin, which managed the care of 32 orphaned raccoons. These animals, many of whom were victims of vehicle strikes or animal attacks, underwent intensive rehabilitation, including specialized feeding and socialization, to prepare them for release into the wild. Subsequently, the organization officially opened the Vancouver Island Animal Behaviour Centre in Cowichan. This facility was established to provide vulnerable animals with specialized behavioral support and individualized care in a calm, predictable environment. According to BC SPCA CEO Craig Daniell, the center addresses an “increasing need for specialized behavioral support” among animals entering the organization’s care. The center features custom-designed indoor and outdoor spaces intended to assist animals struggling with fear or past trauma. Kim Monteith, manager of the BC SPCA’s animal behaviour and welfare team, noted that the center will help animals build on their progress in a stable environment rather than facing the stress of frequent transitions. Beyond direct animal care, the facility serves as a provincial training hub, offering BC SPCA staff from across British Columbia hands-on opportunities to learn animal behavior management.
