Political tensions have escalated between the BDI party and the VLIN/VLEN coalition in North Macedonia. Initially, the BDI criticized the coalition for its perceived weakness and lack of executive influence. The situation progressed to severe allegations of corruption and judicial interference, with the BDI accusing coalition members of causing significant financial damages and attempting to exert undue pressure on the judiciary. Recent disputes have focused on party structure and leadership. The BDI has accused the VLEN coalition of political deception regarding party mergers, claiming that official records in the Central Register show the Alternativa party still exists as a separate entity under Zekirija Berisha. VLEN has dismissed these claims, stating that the transition of its constituent parties into a single entity is a ‘phased legal procedure’ being conducted according to regulatory laws. VLEN has further intensified its rhetoric, accusing the BDI of operating like a notorious ‘politburo’ characterized by nervousness and attempts to maintain an illusion of control. VLEN claims BDI leader Ali Ahmeti is caught in a dilemma regarding Artan Grubi’s house arrest, suggesting that supporting Grubi is politically risky while abandoning him might expose internal party secrets. In response, the BDI has accused VLEN of using conspiracies to mask corruption and suggested the coalition is submitting to VMRO-DPMNE to secure political protection. BDI cited specific allegations of financial irregularities, including 252 million euros in damages from illegal constructions in Çair linked to Izet Mexhiti, 19 million euros involving Burim Latifi, and misappropriated funds involving Nedim Rama. BDI has called for non-selective justice and an independent judiciary. VLEN has recently expanded its critiques, accusing the BDI of manipulating public perception by falsely conflating police employment competitions with student recruitment for police training.
