In early September 2026, safety measures were introduced at Porto da Barra in Salvador through the establishment of an exclusive swimming zone. This project, approved by the Navy and costing R$ 450,000, utilized yellow buoys to delimit a 90-meter stretch of sand to prevent accidents involving motorized watercraft. Shortly after, the Institute of Environment and Water Resources (Inema) reported significant water quality issues across the city. Monitoring for Escherichia coli (E. coli) led to 23 beach locations in Salvador being declared unfit for swimming, including Porto da Barra, Itapuã, and Rio Vermelho. While 66% of monitored points across the Bahia coastline remained suitable for bathing, several prominent urban beaches were restricted due to environmental standards. Affected areas included Farol da Barra, Piatã, São Tomé de Paripe, Tubarão, Periperi, Penha, Bogari, Bonfim, and Boca do Rio. Conversely, locations such as Contorno, Ondina, Amaralina, Pituba, Patamares, and Stella Maris were identified as suitable for bathing.
