Beatification process of Bishop Ján Vojtaššák

The beatification process for Bishop Ján Vojtaššák has progressed to the Vatican, where the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints is evaluating his life and moral profile. The submission of the document ‘Positio super martyrio’ has brought renewed scrutiny to his actions during the period of the first Slovak Republic (1939–1945).

Historical debate surrounds Vojtaššák’s involvement in the State Council and his stance regarding anti-Jewish measures and the ‘Aryanization’ of Jewish property. While Bishop František Trstenský of Spiš acknowledged these historical facts and emphasized the Church’s rejection of antisemitism, the Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Slovakia has expressed concerns regarding the preservation of ancestral memory.

Historians have offered varying perspectives on the evaluation. Gabriel Hunčaga noted that Rome must investigate Vojtaššák’s moral integrity and whether he showed sufficient self-reflection regarding the wartime regime. Róbert Letz suggested that while Vojtaššák may not have fully grasped the consequences of policies facing Jewish citizens, the evaluation should consider his entire life, including his contributions to building churches, schools, and social institutions.
