Bedrocan declared bankrupt, ending Dutch bankruptcy and impact on European cannabis monopoly supply
Bedrocan, the sole supplier of medicinal cannabis in the Netherlands since 2003, has been formally declared bankrupt by the District Court of the Northern Netherlands. The family-owned company, operated by the Erkelens family, transitioned to bankruptcy following a failed attempt to reach agreements with creditors and the Bureau Medicinale Cannabis (BMC) after a brief suspension of payments. The insolvency stems from the termination of a long-standing contract by the Ministry of Health as part of a strategy to move toward imported supplies. This loss of revenue prevented Bedrocan from maintaining operations at its primary sites in Veendam and Emmeloord. While the company’s branches in Canada and Denmark remain unaffected, the domestic collapse ends the company’s long-standing monopoly on the Dutch medicinal cannabis market. The bankruptcy poses significant challenges for approximately 7,000 patients relying on standardized products to treat conditions such as MS, epilepsy, cancer, and cerebral palsy. Although large quantities of medicinal cannabis valued at millions of euros remain in storage, these stocks can only be sold with the cooperation of the BMC due to regulations under the Opium Act. The Ministry of Health has indicated that existing stocks should last until mid-2027, providing a window to conduct a European tender process to secure a new supplier. The fallout has extended beyond the Netherlands, raising concerns in Italy regarding the continuity of medical cannabis supplies. Because Italy relies heavily on imports, the projected halt of Dutch exports by the end of 2026 creates logistical challenges for Italian pharmacies. Experts warn that patients may face difficulties as switching to alternative sources might necessitate changes to medical prescriptions.
