Beijing drone possession and storage ban

Overview

Beijing authorities have announced a comprehensive ban on the possession, storage, and transportation of drones and their core components within the city’s administrative boundaries, effective November 15, 2026.

The regulation follows a June aviation accident in which a light aircraft struck the Citic Tower, resulting in one fatality and 13 injuries. To “safeguard the security of the capital,” the municipal government is replacing previous registration requirements with a total prohibition for the general public.

To assist residents, the city has introduced a tiered subsidy program for device buybacks and scrap recycling. Subsidies are higher for those completed by October 31 and decrease for actions taken between November 1 and November 14. Other options include using free shipping via China Post EMS to move equipment outside of Beijing. Failure to comply by the deadline may result in fines and equipment confiscation.

While the ban is strict, exceptions are granted for official purposes, including counter-terrorism, emergency response, scientific research, and agriculture, provided they pass safety assessments. Additionally, a no-fly zone is scheduled to be established starting September 20 to restrict non-emergency flight activities.
