Bekasi irrigation and riverbank management

Authorities in the Bekasi region of Indonesia have initiated large-scale enforcement and normalization projects involving riverbanks and irrigation channels.

Initially, enforcement actions focused on the removal of illegal structures. In Bekasi City, officials cleared approximately 40 buildings along the Kali Harun riverbanks following a period of warning letters. In Bekasi Regency, a joint force of 300 personnel demolished 257 illegal buildings along the 7.6-kilometer SS Balong Tua secondary channel to restore state-owned assets and support irrigation normalization.

Following these clearances, the Bekasi Regency Government has accelerated irrigation normalization efforts to mitigate drought affecting agricultural lands. In the Kalen Kendal Secondary Channel, normalization is underway to ensure water reaches northern agricultural areas. Additionally, authorities are working to complete the normalization of the Bendung Kedung Gede (BKG) irrigation channel in the Pebayuran District, a project intended to support rice field irrigation for up to 6,000 hectares of farmland.
