European potato production and prices face sharp decline

The European potato sector continues to face a severe supply crisis driven by climate volatility and reduced cultivation areas. Total European production is seeing significant declines in major producing nations. In Germany, the national harvest is expected to fall from approximately 13.9 million tonnes in 2025 to an estimated 10.4 million tonnes in 2026. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this 24.8 percent decrease is driven by an 11.1 percent reduction in cultivated area and a 15.4 percent drop in yields per hectare, likely caused by extreme heat and drought during the summer. Specifically, average yields are expected to drop from 46 tons per hectare in 2025 to 38.9 tons per hectare in 2026. These shortages have triggered substantial price fluctuations. In August 2026, producer prices for table potatoes saw a 61.5 percent surge, the strongest monthly increase in three years. By September 2026, consumer prices for fresh potatoes had risen by 11.3 percent compared to the previous year, significantly exceeding the general inflation rate of 3.3 percent, though prices for processed products like frozen French fries decreased by 4.7 percent. Despite these domestic harvest shortages, Germany maintained a self-sufficiency rate of approximately 145 percent for the 2024/25 economic year, remaining a net exporter. In Bavaria, the harvest reached roughly 1.2 million tonnes, representing a 36.2 percent decrease from the previous year and a 26.4 percent drop from the 2020–2025 average. This decline is attributed to extreme heat beginning in late June, water shortages, and pests such as the reed grass cicada. While Bavarian cultivation area decreased by 4 percent, starch potato acreage saw an increase. In Bavaria, prices for firm potatoes rose from 12.10 euros to 29.20 euros per 100 kg. The crisis has expanded across the continent.
