Political debates in Belgium have centered on fiscal and social policy reforms. Initially, the Socialist Party (PS) proposed a 1% wealth tax on assets exceeding 5 million euros and suggested employment guarantees for the long-term unemployed. During this period, the mutual insurance organization Solidaris also criticized a proposal to tax non-profit surpluses, labeling it an ‘ideological attack’ on social protection. As discussions progressed, the focus expanded to broader budgetary strategies and pension reforms. In Belgium, political parties proposed competing methods to achieve 10 billion euros in savings, with the MR party advocating for a smaller state and the Écolo party suggesting increased contributions from high-income earners. The PS also signaled intentions to reform the pension system, specifically opposing a universal retirement age of 67 and seeking to abolish the ‘malus pension’ mechanism. In France, the Greens introduced a counter-budget proposal featuring taxes on oil and gas company turnover and higher inheritance taxes on large estates. Concurrently, rising healthcare and medicine costs in Belgium emerged as a significant budgetary concern. Following these debates, the Belgian Parliament officially approved a pension reform law implementing a bonus-malus system to encourage longer working lives. Under this system, individuals working beyond the legal retirement age receive a bonus, while those retiring early without a 35-year career face a penalty. The financial impact is set to scale from 2 percent per year to 5 percent by 2040. In response, PS chairman Paul Magnette criticized the government’s austerity approach, calling for wage and pension increases funded by slowing defense spending and implementing targeted wealth taxes.
