Belgium energy tax shift debate

In late July 2026, the Belgian Anders party called for another postponement of the planned gas excise‑duty increase, arguing that national gas storage at Loenhout was only 27 % full and that rising Middle‑East tensions could drive winter energy bills higher. The party said that raising gas taxes while cutting electricity taxes would hurt household affordability and urged a full offset through lower electricity prices.

Nevertheless, the federal government confirmed that a three‑layer “tax shift” will start on 1 August 2026, reducing electricity taxes and increasing taxes on gas, oil and diesel, with further regional and EU phases slated for 2028 and 2030. Officials warned that the sudden surge in electricity demand could strain the grid. At the same time, the Netherlands reported a sharp rise in electrical‑panel fires as older meter cupboards struggle with the higher load from heat pumps, electric vehicles and home batteries, highlighting safety concerns that could affect Belgium’s own electricity network.

The situation has progressed from political pressure to delay the gas‑tax hike to the rollout of a broader tax‑shift policy, while emerging safety issues in the electricity infrastructure have become a prominent concern in both Belgium and neighboring Netherlands.
