Belgium‑Netherlands beach cleanup events

Overview

In July 2026 the 17th Eneco Clean Beach Cup was held along the Belgian coast, drawing thousands of volunteers from surf and beach clubs to collect and measure marine litter from dunes to shoreline. The annual event, running since 2010, highlighted the persistent problem of plastic waste in the North Sea.

A week later, the Dutch Boskalis Beach Cleanup Tour entered its 13th edition, with about 1,900 volunteers slated for 30 stages across the Netherlands. Since its 2013 start the tour has removed over 119,000 kg of waste, though micro‑ and mesoplastics remain a concern. Concurrently, a free Strandbus pilot was launched to ferry visitors to coastal sites without cars, aiming to reduce transport‑related emissions and support the clean‑up effort.

Together the two initiatives illustrate a coordinated, community‑driven push to tackle beach litter across the Benelux region, combining large‑scale volunteer actions with new mobility solutions to sustain coastal cleanliness.
