Belize government legislative initiatives

In late July 2026 the Belize Broadcasting Authority introduced a Broadcasting Bill that would extend licensing and compliance requirements to certain online media services, creating a new “National Online Broadcaster” classification. Critics warned the draft could curb freedom of expression and impose burdens on small creators, urging broader consultation.

A week later the Briceño administration moved forward with a separate Revenue Authority Bill to establish a Semi‑Autonomous Revenue Authority (SARA) intended to modernise tax administration without raising taxes. The proposal promises merit‑based recruitment and options for existing tax‑service staff, but unions expressed concerns over job security and the status of hundreds of officers.

Together, the two proposals illustrate Belize’s current drive to reform regulatory frameworks in both the media and fiscal sectors, sparking public debate over their potential impact.
