Belize has moved to deepen its diplomatic and academic relationship with Taiwan. During an official visit by Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, the two nations signed a Bilateral Cooperation Agreement for the Training of Diplomatic Personnel. Furthermore, the University of Belize and TaiwanICDF signed a letter of intent to create a Taiwan-Caribbean Institute to facilitate regional knowledge exchange. The sanctions, which took effect on October 12, 2026, include a ban on entry visas for Hong Kong and Macau, the freezing of assets and property within China, and a prohibition on Chinese entities engaging in business or cooperation with the sanctioned officials. Beijing has characterized Fonseca and Villate as “anti-China politicians” whose actions are “damaging China’s core interests.” These measures target officials from nations, including Belize and Paraguay, that maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
