Benin electricity infrastructure expansion
Overview
Benin has initiated several large scale financing efforts to expand its national electricity access and renewable energy capacity.
In early October 2026, the country secured approximately 100 million euros to support the PEDER+ project. This initiative, involving the Agence française de développement, Bpifrance, and the European Union, aims to connect 120,000 additional households to the grid and stabilize the Société béninoise d’énergie électrique (SBEE).
By late October 2026, further financing totaling 30 million euros was signed for the IPP50 solar project. Supported by AXIAN Energy, the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations du Bénin, the International Finance Corporation, and Proparco, this project involves constructing four photovoltaic power plants. The IPP50 initiative is expected to provide electricity to roughly 383,000 people and is part of a broader national goal to expand electricity access to nearly one million additional households by 2030.
