The BepiColombo mission, a joint venture between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is entering its final approach phase toward Mercury following an eight-year journey. Having traveled approximately 9.3 billion kilometers since its launch in October 2018, the spacecraft has utilized nine planetary flybys of Earth, Venus, and Mercury to manage its velocity. A critical milestone was achieved on September 2, 2026, when the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM) successfully completed a high-risk separation maneuver. On September 3, 2026, the spacecraft successfully separated its two scientific probes from the MTM, which provided the necessary propulsion for the long interplanetary transit. Mission controllers confirmed the successful detachment after receiving telemetry signals. The two orbiters, ESA’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and JAXA’s Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (Mio), will now travel together in a stacked configuration for several months as they prepare for final orbital insertion. Recent updates indicate the spacecraft has traveled approximately 10 billion kilometers through the inner solar system. The mission faces extreme environmental conditions, including temperatures between -180°C and 450°C. If the arrival phase proceeds as planned, the orbiters are expected to achieve orbital insertion on November 21, 2026. A subsequent maneuver between December 9 and 10, 2026, will involve the MPO and Mio separating to begin their individual orbital paths.
