Berlin 2026 state election
Overview
In mid‑July 2026 Berlin’s election authority eased advertising restrictions, allowing political messages on commercial billboards at any time and permitting parties to hang campaign signs on streetlights from early August, well before the traditional seven‑week posting window. The change, driven by the CDU and SPD, was intended to simplify compliance and reduce the workload for volunteers.
The relaxed rules quickly collided with on‑the‑ground campaigning. The artist‑collective Bergpartei, led by candidate Esther Borkam, placed handmade posters ahead of the legal posting period; the city’s sanitation service removed them and levied fines of €10‑€50 per placard. At the same time, the Left and Greens revived the “Deutsche Wohnen & Co Enteignen” housing expropriation initiative, which had won a 2021 referendum but remained unimplemented.
By early August, several major parties—including the CDU, SPD, The Left, the Greens and the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance—also posted election flyers before the permitted start on 2 August, citing permits dated 1 August or attributing the breach to installer error. Authorities warned that such violations carry the same €10‑€50 fines per poster, and coordinated early‑posting efforts in districts such as Neukölln prompted further scrutiny.
