Beverage companies revise plastic recycling claims
Overview
Major beverage corporations Danone, Coca-Cola, and Nestlé have committed to modifying the recycling claims used on their plastic packaging to prevent greenwashing. This initiative follows pressure from the European Commission, the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) network, and consumer advocacy groups such as BEUC.
To provide more precise information, companies will update labels to clarify that claims of being ‘100% recycled’ exclude the cap and label. Furthermore, the phrase ‘Recycle me again’ will be replaced with ‘Recycle me’ to avoid the false impression that a bottle has already undergone a recycling process or can be recycled infinitely. These commitments apply to physical packaging as well as digital communications on websites and social media platforms.
