Bezalel Smotrich territorial sovereignty claims

Overview

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has issued a series of controversial statements regarding territorial sovereignty and the future of regional conflicts.

Smotrich drew condemnation from Egyptian officials after suggesting in an interview with the website Hashtagبلاخ that if Egypt were to attack Israel, there would be ‘no Sinai, at least.’ Egypt has issued a decisive rejection of these statements, asserting its national sovereignty and stating that any attempt to involve its territory in Israeli political conflicts or to displace Palestinians into Sinai is a ‘red line’ regarding its national security. Egyptian officials characterized the remarks as ‘hollow threats’ used for political posturing.

Speaking at the National Conservatism Conference in Jerusalem, Smotrich expanded his position by calling for the permanent imposition of Israeli sovereignty over territories currently under its control in both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. He argued that a nation that initiates a war and subsequently loses it should be required to cede territory to the victor to ensure lasting deterrence.

Smotrich further advocated for the voluntary migration of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Arab and Muslim countries, describing Gaza as a ‘distorted political entity’ that is unsustainable. He also characterized Palestinian nationalism as a ‘fiction’ or ‘myth’ created in the early 20th century to oppose Jewish nationalism. In justifying these claims, he cited the historical context of the Jewish people being forcibly expelled by the Roman Empire approximately 2,000 years ago. These remarks were made ahead of Israel's scheduled general elections on October 27.
