Biedronka labor dispute and recruitment efforts

Overview

Employees at the Biedronka retail chain in Poland have moved toward a strike referendum following a collective dispute with management. The Solidarność union reported that staff are experiencing “extreme physical and mental exhaustion” caused by low wages and severe staffing shortages, which have left many stores operating with only two or three employees per shift.

In response to labor needs and compensation adjustments, the company has implemented several measures. Earlier in 2026, over 70,000 employees in stores and distribution centers received raises, and the maximum monthly bonus for cashier-salespeople was doubled to 500 PLN gross. To address recruitment, Biedronka launched a ‘Work Festival’ across six Polish cities, utilizing a casual recruitment format featuring chillout zones and electronic music to connect with potential candidates.
