The Big 12 Conference volleyball season has commenced with several high-profile matchups. In its conference opener, Kansas State defeated UCF in five sets, overcoming a two-set deficit to win 25-18, 25-22, 24-26, 13-25, and 10-15. Following this result, Kansas State prepared to host No. 18 BYU as part of the Cougars’ first Big 12 road trip. BYU, entering the matchup with a 9-1 record, defeated Kansas State in four sets (25-27, 18-26, 26-24, 18-25) to extend its winning streak to seven matches. Elli Mortensen led BYU with 19 kills, while K-State freshman Addison Massey recorded a career-high 23 kills in the loss. In separate Big 12 action, No. 19 Kansas secured a sweep against No. 23 Utah with set scores of 32-30, 25-20, and 26-24. Although Utah pushed the first and third sets into extended play, Kansas maintained control to earn the victory. Building on this momentum, No. 17 BYU has extended its winning streak to eight matches and holds an 11-1 overall record with a 3-0 standing in conference play. This follows a successful swing through Kansas, which included a victory over No. 19 Kansas. For their performances, BYU players Elli Mortensen and Kelli Jo Burgess were named the Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. BYU is scheduled to face Houston on Thursday before hosting West Virginia on Saturday.
