Overview

BioBTX, a circular chemistry developer based in Groningen, is constructing the world’s first commercial-scale facility to convert mixed plastic waste into renewable aromatic chemicals. Located at Chemie Park Delfzijl in the Netherlands, the plant will utilize the company’s proprietary Integrated Catalytic Cracking Process (ICCP) technology.

The facility is designed to process approximately 20,000 tonnes of mixed plastic waste annually to produce roughly 10,000 tonnes of aromatic oil—comprising benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX)—alongside 8,000 tonnes of sustainable by-products. These outputs serve as feedstocks for the pharmaceutical, coatings, and battery material industries.

Construction is slated to begin in early 2027, with operations expected to commence by mid-2028. The project, which has secured €80–90 million in funding, is estimated to create 35 jobs and reduce life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions by 70% to 80% compared to conventional fossil-based production. Covestro has been a strategic partner and shareholder in BioBTX since 2024.
