The Regional Government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía) has implemented extensive biodiversity and wetland conservation programs through significant financial investments. Between 2019 and 2025, the region invested €115 million in large-scale biodiversity initiatives, which contributed to the recovery of key species. Notable successes include the establishment of a stable Northern Bald Ibis colony and the reclassification of the Iberian lynx from “Endangered” to “Vulnerable” following population growth to over 2,400 individuals across the Iberian Peninsula. Building on these efforts, the administration has focused on expanding and restoring protected wetlands, with total investments since 2019 reaching approximately €100 million. A major priority has been the Doñana area, where over 8,700 hectares of high-value land have been brought under public management through acquisitions such as Veta la Palma and Tierras Bajas. Additionally, restoration projects in Almería’s Salinas de Cabo de Gata, supported by NextGenerationEU funds, aim to protect migratory birdlife and improve ecological functionality in the Ramsar-recognized site. As of late 2026, the Junta de Andalucía has mobilized €86.1 million specifically for wetland restoration and expansion since 2022. Current efforts include the restoration of the Trebujena marshes and the Carboneros salt marshes in Cádiz, alongside a nearly €1 million project in Salinas de Cabo de Gata. In the Doñana region, SEO/BirdLife is also working to restore the El Partido stream to support local biodiversity.
