Biodiversity decline in France

Overview

Reports from the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle and the Office français de la biodiversité indicate a significant decline in French biodiversity and habitat health between 2019 and 2024.

Initial findings highlighted that nearly one in five amphibians and one in four reptiles are threatened, with two-thirds of these species experiencing population declines. Drivers for this decline included urbanization, pesticides, road traffic, invasive species, and climate change.

Subsequent detailed analysis of over 1,000 scientific evaluations revealed that 67% of assessed habitats and species are in unfavorable condition. This represents a decrease in favorable conservation states to just 22%. The reports identify soil artificialization—the conversion of natural or agricultural land into built environments—as the primary pressure on biodiversity, surpassing pollution and agricultural intensification. Extreme weather events, including droughts and record heat, further exacerbate the strain on these ecosystems.
