Biological effects of multi-day fasting study
Overview
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London and the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences conducted a study monitoring 12 healthy volunteers during a seven-day water-only fast. By analyzing approximately 3,000 blood proteins, the study identified a metabolic shift occurring around the second or third day, where the body moves from relying on glucose to using stored fat for energy.
Findings indicate that the third day serves as a critical biological threshold. Beyond this point, significant changes were observed in proteins across multiple organ systems, suggesting a systemic response rather than changes localized to specific tissues. While participants lost an average of 5.7 kg—consisting of both fat and lean mass—the study noted that lean mass was largely recovered after resuming food intake, whereas fat loss was sustained.
