Biological links in chronic exhaustion research
Overview
Researchers from the University of East Anglia, Oxford BioDynamics, and Norwich Medical School have identified shared biological and genetic networks that may explain chronic exhaustion and cognitive impairments across several distinct conditions. These conditions include long Covid, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
Initial findings published in the Journal of Translational Medicine suggest that while these illnesses have different triggers, they converge on major biological systems such as immune signaling, mitochondrial energy production, and metabolic regulation. Using the EpiSwitch Orion platform to analyze genomic architecture, researchers found that while individual genes may not overlap significantly, the regulatory networks in which they interact show strong similarities.
Subsequent research expanded on these genetic connections, identifying specific highly interconnected genes such as RUNX1, PPARGC1A, CDH2, NRP1, and PLCG2. The studies highlight how network analysis can reveal connections, such as those involving the LAG3 gene, that are not apparent through individual gene examination.
Recent findings reinforce these connections, suggesting that shared biological mechanisms, including stress reactivity and sleep consistency, may underlie common symptoms like exhaustion and cognitive impairment across these different diseases. Clinical observations continue to emphasize the importance of monitoring sleep patterns, as issues like obstructive sleep apnea may impact cognitive health in the context of these chronic conditions.
