Biotechnology clinical and financial developments

Biotechnology companies have reported various clinical and financial developments during the first half of 2026.

Anavex Life Sciences reported progress in clinical programs for Alzheimer’s disease and Rett syndrome using its lead candidate, blarcamesine. The company noted that Phase 2b/3 studies indicated a slowing of cognitive decline in early Alzheimer’s patients. Regulatory engagement continues with the EMA and FDA, and the company reported a cash position of $118.3 million, intended to fund operations through mid-to-late fiscal 2028.

Abivax reported a widening net loss of €165.9 million for the first half of 2026, driven by increased research and development costs for its lead candidate, obefazimod. However, the company strengthened its liquidity through a July public offering, providing a cash runway into the fourth quarter of 2029. To prepare for potential commercialization, Abivax appointed Chris Rabbat as Chief Medical Officer and Tim Kelly as Chief Technical Officer.

Newron Pharmaceuticals reported a net loss of €16.4 million for the first half of 2026, as research and development expenses for its schizophrenia candidate, evenamide, more than doubled. The company is progressing with its Phase 3 ENIGMA-TRS 1 program, with topline 12-week results expected in Q1 2027. Newron also secured a financing agreement for up to €38 million and received a €5.5 million milestone payment from partner EA Pharma.
