In early October 2026, several biodiversity and birdwatching initiatives were organized across Argentina and Colombia. In Argentina, the province of San Luis announced its first institutional participation in the ‘Global Big Day’, a 24-hour citizen science event coordinated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Various protected areas, including the La Florida Floristic-Faunistic Reserve and the Guanacache, Desaguadero, and Bebedero lagoons, were designated for recording bird data. Following this, the Global Big Day saw more than thirty national parks in Argentina participate. Approximately 1,100 observers across the country recorded 757 bird species within a 24-hour period using the eBird Argentina platform. Key registration areas included Iguazú, Iberá, Mburucuyá, Pre-Delta, El Palmar, and Ciervo de los Pantanos national parks, with significant participation from Patagonia and the Litoral region. Globally, the initiative engaged 50,706 enthusiasts who recorded 7,895 species. Additionally, the third Festival de las Aves was scheduled for October 17 at Parque Provincial Presidente Sarmiento in San Juan, Argentina. This event, organized Organized by the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development, the event included bird observation workshops, painting and kite-flying contests for children, guided wetland tours, and conservation activities such as bird releases and the destruction of traps and cages. In Cúcuta, Colombia, the Los Olivos Life Park prepared for its second ‘October Big Day’. The park has noted an increase in documented biodiversity, with bird species counts rising from 63 to 86 within a year, and has expanded its research to include mammals and bat populations in partnership with the University of Pamplona.
