Bitcoin ecosystem AI security audits

Overview

The Bitcoin Red Team, a global group of security researchers, has conducted large-scale audits of the Bitcoin open-source ecosystem using artificial intelligence. The initiative has identified thousands of anomalies across hundreds of projects, including a significant number of critical and high-severity vulnerabilities.

As the audit progressed, researchers reported a growing reliance on Chinese AI models, such as Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 and Z.ai’s GLM 5.2. Team leader Calle noted that these models are preferred for deep research because US-based models from OpenAI and Anthropic often impose cybersecurity restrictions that can hinder extensive code analysis.

The team utilizes a process of automated AI-driven analysis followed by human verification. To mitigate risk, they have adopted a policy of reporting suspicious findings privately to developers to allow for fixes before public disclosure. The researchers noted that the complexity of the Lightning Network software presents particular challenges for the auditing process.
