Bjarke Ingels Group Tirana Fountain Plaza design
Overview
The Danish architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has won the international design competition for the Fountain Plaza Tirana project in Albania. Located in Rinia Park, the proposed mixed-use development is designed to integrate residential units, office spaces, a hotel, and cultural facilities.
The design features a cloud-shaped structure elevated approximately 20 metres above the ground on a network of slender white columns. This elevation is intended to preserve ground-level greenery and pedestrian movement, creating over 1,000 square metres of covered public space.
Sustainability is a core component of the proposal, which includes a closed-loop system for rainwater collection and reuse for irrigation and flood mitigation. A notable feature is an ‘inverted fountain’ designed to mimic rainfall, which, alongside the preservation of the existing historic fountain, aims to improve local microclimatic conditions.
