Bulgarian political leaders have called for increased international and European cooperation to address escalating security threats in the Black Sea region. President Iliana Jotova has advocated for a collective response to recent offensives, seeking guidance from NATO and utilizing the ‘Eastern Guard’ strategy to support the eastern flank. She warned that the conflict has expanded beyond the Russia-Ukraine war, threatening maritime shipping and potentially triggering food crises and supply disruptions in Africa and Asia. To facilitate negotiations, Jotova noted that Bulgaria is engaging in multilateral diplomacy involving the European Union, the United Nations, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. In a separate appeal, Mihaela Dotova, head of the National Assembly, urged for the creation of a shared security zone in the Black Sea to protect the free movement of goods. MEP Andrey Novakov has also proposed an EU naval mission similar to the ‘Aspides’ operation to prevent rising insurance costs for essential commodities. Following an escalation of maritime incidents near the coasts of Bulgaria and Romania, the European Parliament officially adopted a resolution condemning Russian attacks on civilian commercial vessels. The resolution, passed with 432 votes in favor, 52 against, and 88 abstentions, holds Russia responsible for targeting maritime infrastructure and violating Romanian airspace. Since early October 2026, at least seven commercial vessels have been targeted, resulting in over 24 civilian crew members who have died or gone missing. One specific incident involved the vessel Khoryv, which reportedly sank approximately 13 nautical miles off the Romanian coast near Constanța, leaving Constanța following a suspected drone attack. Of the 13 crew members on board, one sailor dead died and three others remain missing. The Parliament urged the EU to consider a naval operation and called on NATO to explore a regional initiative based on ‘Black Sea Sentinel’ discussions.
