Blantyre Water Board leadership crisis

A leadership crisis at the Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has led to significant administrative and legal instability. Initially, employees and citizens called for presidential intervention to remove CEO Yeremia Chihana and Board Chairperson Stanley Chirwa following a cycle of suspensions and reinstatements. Chihana faced allegations including unauthorized appointments and securing a K500 million overdraft without board approval. Labor unions staged protests, citing concerns that the standoff was crippling essential water services.

The situation evolved through judicial intervention. While the High Court of Malawi had previously ordered Chihana’s reinstatement, a subsequent ruling by Justice Allan Muhome vacated an injunction, requiring Chihana to remain away from his office while the Board reviews his suspension.

Parallel to the leadership dispute, legal controversies emerged regarding payments to Mlauzi Legal Solutions. While Chihana had questioned a MK62 million payment categorized as ‘salary’ rather than professional fees, the law firm denied any impropriety, asserting the funds were for legitimate services and threatening legal action against claims of defamation.
