Bluesky social media service disruptions
Overview
On August 16, 2026, the social media platform Bluesky experienced widespread service disruptions. Users reported difficulties logging in, failing feeds, and connection errors across mobile and web versions. Reports of issues, including error messages such as ‘Failed to reach upstream service,’ appeared in waves and affected multiple regions including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Portugal.
By August 19, Bluesky attributed the approximately 24-hour outage to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The company stated the platform was flooded with massive amounts of parasitic traffic designed to saturate resources. While attackers have claimed responsibility, their involvement remains unconfirmed. Bluesky reported that it has strengthened its defenses and is monitoring the situation.
