Overview
The BMW Group has demonstrated significant advancements in automotive circularity through its Car2Car research project, which has increased the rate of high-quality material recovery from end-of-life vehicles from 6 percent to 51 percent. This ‘Car2Car rate’ specifically refers to materials recovered at a quality sufficient for direct reintegration into new automotive manufacturing.
Key improvements were achieved in metal recovery through enhanced pre-selection, modified shredding processes, and more precise separation of aluminum alloys. Steel usability rose from 1 percent to 81 percent, aluminum from 23 percent to 52 percent, and copper from 48 percent to 68 percent. A major breakthrough involved a new method to reduce copper contamination in steel scrap, enabling the production of high-quality flat steel. This process has led to a patent application and the production of over 100,000 series parts at the BMW Leipzig plant, which were installed in vehicles sourced from 433 scrapped cars across 60 different BMW models.
In addition to Car2Car, the BMW Group is advancing its circular economy goals through the Future Sustainable Car Materials (FSCM) project. This initiative focuses on reducing the environmental footprint by developing material and component concepts that use less raw material while increasing the proportion of recycled metals without compromising vehicle safety or crashworthiness. Despite these successes in metals, recycling plastics and glass to required automotive standards remains a significant technological challenge due to material complexity.
