Tourism leaders in Bodrum have been disputing media reports and public perceptions regarding the health of the local hospitality sector. Initially, representatives from the Professional Hotel Managers Association (POYD) and the Bodrum Hotelier Association (BODER) denounced sensationalist news claiming the region was “alarmed” and predicting widespread hotel bankruptcies. These organizations argued that unverified claims about low occupancy and facility sales were damaging the tourism ecosystem, affecting investor confidence and reservation levels. Mahmut Kocadon, President of the Bodrum Chamber of Commerce, addressed claims of empty hotels and excessive pricing, noting that occupancy rates were approaching 95 percent for August. He attributed earlier seasonal dips to late school closures and university exams, while countering perceptions of high costs by stating the district provides options for various budgets and that members must adhere to specific price tariffs. Recent data suggests the sector is showing resilience despite broader declines in the Muğla region. While Muğla province experienced a 7 percent decrease in foreign visitors compared to the previous year, Bodrum’s decline was significantly more limited at approximately 0.25 percent. Between 549,500 and 628,855 foreign tourists arrived in Bodrum via air and sea during the first seven months of the year. Alişir Şahin, Vice President of BODER, reported that occupancy rates remained strong, reaching the 90 percent band in August. Industry representatives attribute this stability to strong air connections, cruise and yacht tourism capacity, and appeal to high-income segments, with primary markets including the United Kingdom, Russia, Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands. Newer data confirms high activity, with summer occupancy rates reaching approximately 90 percent. While foreign visitor numbers saw a 6-7 percent decrease compared to the previous year, growth in the domestic market has helped balance these figures.
