Boeing 777X development and labor challenges

Overview

Boeing is facing multiple challenges regarding the development and certification of its 777X wide-body jet. CEO Kelly Ortberg has indicated that testing and certification phases could extend into 2027, primarily due to pending certification of GE Aerospace’s GE9X engines following identified issues with engine seals.

Compounding these technical delays, the company faces potential labor unrest. Approximately 17,000 engineers and technical staff represented by the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) have authorized a strike, which is set to occur if contract negotiations fail by October 6, 2026. Ortberg noted that a strike would cause the 777X certification program to shut down, further impacting a program that is already seven years behind its original schedule.
