Boeing production disruptions from supplier dispute
Overview
Boeing has experienced a nearly two-month halt in the production of its 777 freighter aircraft due to a dispute with Vaero, a Florida-based supplier. The conflict involved the delivery of a trailing-edge rib kit, a component described as ‘indispensable’ for wing production.
The disruption at Boeing’s Everett, Washington facility has also impacted the 767 production line, affecting both commercial cargo aircraft and KC-46 aerial refueling tankers. Court filings indicate the shortage has cost Boeing as much as $6.5 million per day.
While a settlement between Boeing and Vaero was reached in late September, reports as of late October indicate that 777 freighter production had not yet resumed. To prevent future supply chain vulnerabilities, Boeing is reportedly exploring bringing the production of these specific components in-house. The 777X program remains unaffected because it utilizes composite wings.
