Two security guards, Elvis Adongo (38) and Adams Nyaaba Iddrisu (72), were arrested by the Upper East Regional Police Command following the alleged defilement of a 14-year-old student at Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School. The incident reportedly occurred when the victim, a student with autism, entered the school security room to charge a tablet. Following the incident, Ghana’s Deputy Education Minister, Clement Apaak, directed the Ghana Education Service to provide the student with medical care, counseling, and support regarding her boarding status. The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) has called for both criminal prosecution and prosecution, administrative accountability. While commending the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the Upper East Regional Police Command for their initial responses, the NCPTAs has requested that the two suspects be dismissed accountability, and debarred from public service. Furthermore, the Council has urged a nationwide audit and vetting of all school security and non-teaching staff. In response to public criticism regarding the student’s welfare, Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School has reinstated the student’s boarding status. The school had previously changed her status from boarding to day student, but the Headmistress confirmed the reversal in a letter to the student’s parent dated August 20, 2026. This includes mandatory background checks, fitness-for-duty assessments, reversal follows directives from the Ministry of Education and improved recruitment practices. The NCPTAs also recommended the implementation Ghana Education Service (GES). The Ministry of mandatory child protection training specifically designed Education has emphasized that the student should not be held responsible for handling students with special educational needs to better safeguard the alleged abuse. While the investigation into the conduct of the two watchmen continues, the Ministry has mandated that the student population. receive necessary medical care and counseling.
