Bolivian euthanasia legislative debate

Overview

The debate over the “Palliative Care, Dignified Death, and Euthanasia Bill” in Bolivia has intensified following public advocacy from terminal patients. Aldrin Ichuta, a young man suffering from aggressive bone cancer, has used social media to call for the legalization of assisted death to prevent continued suffering, stating, “I am afraid of death, but what I fear most is leaving in pain, leaving suffering.”

The proposed legislation, promoted by Deputy Diego Bráñez, is currently under review by the Chamber of Deputies. If passed, the law would restrict assisted death to terminally ill adults with incurable diseases, subject to rigorous medical and psychological evaluations.

In response to the legislative movement, the Bolivian Episcopal Conference (CEB) has formally rejected the bill. The Church maintains that life is a “sacred gift from God” and argues that the proposal is unconstitutional, violating the fundamental right to life. Rather than legalizing euthanasia, the CEB advocates for expanded access to palliative care and deep sedation to manage pain during the natural end-of-life process.
