Bolivian Vice President Edmand Lara has become the center of political and legal controversy following the release of audio recordings. Initially, Lara circulated an audio file allegedly featuring former Attorney General Roger Mariaca and Argentine strategist Fernando Cerimedo discussing a meeting in Santa Cruz. Lara called for an investigation into the meeting and an unidentified individual referred to as ‘amigo M’. This move drew criticism from journalist Amalia Pando, who accused Lara and Mariaca of attempting to undermine President Rodrigo Paz. The situation escalated when former deputy Amílcar Barral filed a criminal complaint against Lara, alleging the unauthorized interception of private communications. The complaint follows Lara’s claim that he possessed recordings of conversations involving Barral and Colonel Marcelo Ferrufino, which allegedly contained instructions to “defenestrate” the Vice President and attack his wife. Barral has accused the Vice Presidency of acting as an “agency of telephone calls” and has requested a trial of responsibilities for Lara, citing violations of privacy rights and misuse of data. Barral maintains that the recordings were manipulated and demands an explanation for how the private calls were obtained. Lara has denied all allegations of interception, stating, “I have not intercepted, nor ordered the interception, of anyone's private communication,” and has called for a technical expert review to verify the authenticity of the audio files.
