Bolivian public health initiatives and reforms

Overview

Bolivia’s Ministry of Health and Sports has introduced several strategic initiatives to strengthen national public health and expand service access.

In September 2026, the government launched the National Mental Health Plan 2026–2030. This initiative aims to provide free psychological and psychiatric care through the Unified Health System (SUS), focusing on early detection, suicide prevention, and addressing the impacts of cyberbullying on youth. The plan includes training for medical staff through the Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) mhGAP program.

Concurrently, the Ministry is advancing regulatory proposals for Law No. 1280 to control tobacco and nicotine products. Other public health efforts include the expansion of the National Telehealth Program in the Beni department to support remote indigenous communities, the promotion of breastfeeding through the ‘Friends of Mother and Child’ initiative, and the release of findings from a study on HIV prevalence among female sex workers.
