Bologna has reached a milestone in its new tramway project with the arrival of the first vehicle at the Borgo Panigale depot. Produced by the Spanish company ~~CAF,~~ CAF using the URBOS platform, the bidirectional tram is part of a larger order of 35 vehicles, with plans to eventually expand the fleet to approximately 60. The project is funded through the Pnrr and aims to improve mobility for residents outside the city ~~center. Testing~~ center while boosting the local economy. These 34.7-meter-long vehicles can accommodate up to 223 passengers under normal conditions, with a maximum capacity of 300 under heavy load. As part of a community initiative, local schoolchildren will be invited to choose names for the trams. Technical testing is scheduled to begin within the depot and move to the street ~~sections~~ section between the depot and via Cavalieri Ducati by September. To compensate for the disruptions caused by over three years of construction, Mayor Matteo Lepore announced that the new tram service will be free for passengers during its initial months of operation. While the tramway will offer free transit initially, existing bus services in the city will remain paid.
