The investigation into the July 19 death of Abderrahim Fakir during a police operation in Bologna has expanded to include new medical findings and witness testimony. An autopsy previously indicated that Fakir died from violent mechanical asphyxia caused by dorsal compression while being held face-down by two police officers. Preliminary medical examinations have now found no evidence of pre-existing heart conditions in the 42-year-old, though the final cause of death remains undetermined as investigators await toxicological and histological results. The Bologna Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation under the ‘modello 45-bis’ register, which includes the two police officers involved and four emergency medical responders. This status serves as a preliminary notation rather than a formal indictment. Recent footage shows Fakir in a disoriented state prior to the incident, including a recording of Red Cross responders attempting resuscitation while Fakir remained restrained with his hands behind his back and ankles bound by zip ties. Lawyer Fabio Anselmo criticized this, stating agents should have released him before medical intervention began. Meanwhile, a 37-year-old Kosovar man who assisted police by holding Fakir’s ankles claims he has been living in seclusion due to death threats and physical assault from local residents. He reported being beaten and told to ‘disappear,’ forcing him to hide in a friend’s house and only visit his mother under the cover of night. While investigators have interviewed him, he is not currently a suspect. Protests have occurred Following protests in Italy, including demonstrations in Trieste and clashes in Bologna.
