Bonalu festival celebrations in Telangana
Entities: Goddess Mahakali · Ujjaini Mahankali Temple · Bandi Sanjay Kumar · Indrakeeladri Hill · A. Revanth Reddy
Overview
The month‑long Bonalu festival, dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, began in mid‑July 2026 across Telangana. Initial rites started on July 19 at the Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple in Golconda, followed by a delegation offering a Bangaru Bonam to Goddess Kanaka Durga in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Police used drone‑assisted traffic management to handle the movement of over 500 artistes and devotees.
The celebrations continued into early August, with the Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad hosting a major gathering on August 2‑3. Thousands of worshippers arrived with traditional Bonam offerings in decorated earthen pots. The state deployed extensive security, crowd‑management teams, medical camps, drinking‑water stations, special bus services and traffic diversions. Prominent political leaders visited, including Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao and Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who criticised the Rs 20 crore allocation for Bonalu versus Rs 33 crore for Ramzan. Rituals sought blessings for rainfall and agricultural prosperity.
During the Rangam ritual, oracle Swarnalatha warned of heavy rains, floods and fire accidents in the coming year and urged completion of a long‑delayed idol installation within six months. Cultural performances featured the traditional Potharaju dance and an elephant procession, underscoring the festival’s heritage significance.
